Discover Li's Place

Walking into Li's Place on a quiet afternoon in Freeport, Maine, feels a bit like stepping into a local secret that everyone somehow already knows. Tucked at 51 West St, Freeport, ME 04032, United States, this diner-style restaurant has built a steady reputation through word of mouth, repeat customers, and consistently solid reviews from both locals and travelers passing through town after a day of shopping or exploring the coast.

My first visit happened during a road trip through Cumberland County, when a local shop owner casually said, “If you want something real, go to Li’s.” That kind of recommendation usually comes with expectations, and in this case, they were met. The menu leans into comfort food with an Asian-American twist, offering familiar diner staples alongside homestyle Chinese dishes. You’ll see classics like fried rice, lo mein, and egg rolls sharing space with burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast plates that feel straight out of a small-town café.

What stands out immediately is the pace and process. Orders are taken quickly, food arrives hot, and nothing feels rushed or careless. Watching the kitchen during a slower hour, it’s clear that everything is cooked to order. That matters more than people realize. According to food service research published by the National Restaurant Association, made-to-order meals significantly improve customer satisfaction and perceived freshness, which aligns with why this place keeps people coming back.

On one visit, I tried their house fried rice paired with a simple breakfast plate, an unusual combination that somehow worked. The rice was evenly seasoned, not greasy, and packed with vegetables, while the eggs were cooked exactly as requested. It’s the kind of consistency that reviewers often highlight online. Many reviews mention reliability, which in the restaurant world is gold. Culinary experts like those associated with the James Beard Foundation often point out that consistency, not novelty, is what builds long-term trust with diners.

Li’s Place also benefits from its location. Being in Freeport means it attracts a mix of locals, outlet shoppers, and seasonal tourists. That variety shows up in how flexible the menu feels. Portions are generous without being overwhelming, prices are reasonable for the area, and the food appeals to different age groups. Families, solo diners, and workers on lunch breaks all seem equally comfortable here.

From an operational standpoint, the diner model works well. Quick turnover, a focused menu, and familiar flavors reduce waste and keep quality steady. Studies from the USDA on small food establishments note that streamlined menus often lead to better ingredient control and food safety, something that’s easy to overlook but critical for trustworthiness. There haven’t been major public complaints or issues tied to this spot, which reinforces its standing as a dependable choice.

That said, it’s fair to acknowledge limitations. This isn’t a fine-dining experience, and those looking for trendy plating or experimental cuisine might not find it here. Seating can feel tight during peak hours, and the décor is simple. But those things don’t seem to matter much to regulars, who are clearly there for the food and the familiar atmosphere.

What ultimately defines Li’s Place is how it fits into everyday life in Freeport. It’s the kind of restaurant you return to because you know what you’re getting, and you know it’ll be good. The steady stream of positive reviews, the practical menu, and the lived-in feel all point to a diner that understands its role and executes it well. For anyone passing through 51 West Street or searching for a reliable meal in town, this spot earns its reputation one plate at a time.

  • Li's is the best place in town. They are quick to get your food ready, it will be hot when you pick it up, they are wonderfully polite, AND they make the most life changing spring rolls.

  • Excellent food. Large portions. When we came in the summer they were just doing takeout but they served as at the picnic tables. My daughter liked it so much she said her stomach cried tears of joy!

  • We had a great experience ordering takeout from Li's! My friend who used to live in Freeport said it was the best Chinese around so while we were up here for the weekend we had to try it out. It did not disappoint! The Chicken Lo Mein was my favorite and the chicken fingers a close second! We were staying at a bed and breakfast down the road so after an evening of walking downtown it was so nice to grab some Li's takeout and head back to relax!

  • Got the House Rice Noodles level 8 spice, General Tso chicken, and crab rangoons. This is my favorite takeout spot in town. Crab rangoons are always crispy never soggy. The filling is generous and doesn't spill out during cooking. The house noodles will be my go to as they were perfectly seasoned, not dry and generous qoth the protein. General tso chicken was still crispy by the time we got home and sauced perfectly. Service always friendly and fast. Took about 10 minutes from calling to get our food.
